CONDOMINIUM IN DAMANSARA

DAMANSARA. 2021

Rough. Raw. Imperfection. A poetic space, kind of like an artist's studio I always imagine myself working in. I wanted it to look aged and authentic. Being a millennial, my tight budget could only allow for limited things, so I only focus on surfaces and small details rather than demolition and wetwork - basically working around with whatever that is existing instead of making way for new things.

A personal project of mine, the condominium is a 850sqft unit located in the Damansara vicinity. The condo unit focuses on loose furniture instead of built ins, as built ins tend to take up a lot of space and I did not want to waste the budget on permanent fixture as it is not meant to be a forever home. It helps that the home owners do not own a lot of materials and things so storage will not be a painful thing to manage.

I am deeply inspired by vernacular design elements from Southeast Asia combined with a modernist approach by using primary colours that gives an artistic edge in a space against a muted palette as I wanted it to stand out visually. Colours and patterns play a part to enrich the spirit of space. A home is meant to be against any sense of formality. It is a space to wind down and to generate happiness. I want this home to be compatible with a certain lifestyle and visual taste which concerns a more dynamic spirit and energy - without following any trends or generic solutions. Such things that play a part are such as colours, moods, lighting, furniture and entertainment set up. I also wanted to create a sustainable lifestyle without having to do heavy renovation work that tends to be unsustainable in long term.
